Crayon Baking Kit Instructions

Ready to create your own multicolored crayons?
Below are step-by-step instructions to guide you!

Items in the kit:

First, unbox all of the items in your kit. Your kit includes:

  • 2 packs of peeled crayons (20 crayons total - it will be a random mix of colors)

  • 1 cutting board

  • 1 themed silicone mold

  • 1 mini mallet

  • 1 piece of sandpaper

  • 2 ziplock bags

  • 2 wooden stir sticks (take them out of the ziplock bag)

  • 2 temporary glue dots (take them out of the ziplock bag)

Additional things you will need that aren't included in the kit: A baking pan, a piece of aluminum foil and an oven.

Step-by-step instructions:

STEP 1

Prep: Once you have taken all of the supplies out of your box, it's time to start! First, grab the two packs of peeled crayons. Take them out of the packets. Then, choose the colors that you'd like to start with and put those crayons into one of the ziplock bags (we suggest putting 3-5 crayons in at a time).

STEP 2

Smash the crayons: Next, place the ziplock bag (with the crayons inside) on the cutting board. (Fun tip - place a glue dot on the back of the ziplock bag when setting it on the cutting board; this will help it stay in place much better!) Using the mallet, smash the crayons into small pieces. Once you've finished, set the bag aside and repeat the process with the remaining crayons. This part is a favorite for our customers!

Note: It's best to do this on the floor, a wooden table or outside. If outside or on the floor, we recommend using a piece of cardboard or an old blanket/sheet as the foundation to catch any mess!

STEP 3

Fill the molds: Once you are done smashing all of the crayons, grab your mold. Start putting the crayon pieces into each mold cavity (you want to fill it all the way to the top; it can even be overflowing just a bit because when the crayons melt it will reduce in size).

Note: Combine/choose colors based on the color combinations that you like (we shared some of our favorite color combination below)!

STEP 4

Time to bake: After filling the molds, it’s time to bake the crayons! Preheat the oven to 200°F. While it heats up, line a baking sheet with aluminum foil and place the mold on top. Once the oven is ready, bake the crayons for 15-19 minutes. After 15 minutes, check if the wax has melted. If it has, remove the mold to cool. If not, bake for an additional 1-3 minutes.

Fun tip: Turn on the oven light while baking so the kids can enjoy watching the wax melt!

STEP 5

Cooling + Sandpapering: Once you take them out of the oven, use the wooden stir sticks to stir/swirl the colors together. After stirring, let the crayons cool for about 30 minutes until fully cool + solidified. Then, pop them out of the molds one by one (this part is another customer fave!). If you notice a thin, clear wax layer on the back (a normal result of the baking process), simply sand it off with sandpaper until smooth. Voilà!
